strengths . quiet, fast, able to concentrate, very enduring, and he's a strong stitch, able to heal most injuries.
weaknesses . greedy, easily persuaded, easily bribed, cowardly, and he's extremely self-conscious of his healing.
personality . there are two sides to every story, and that being said, memphis and red are virtually two different people. you're likely to run into red. he isn't the most outgoing fellow, but he's painfully polite, and he will talk when spoken to. however, this can often be seen as shallow. he has a hard time relating to people, and often comes across as cold or distant. some people view him as being overconfident, bordering on the edge of egotistical. he can be extremely blunt at times, but he is prone to sugar-coat information regarding injuries. he knows that many people don't want to be told the truth, and while he doesn't lie, he will often restrain information. you see, red's entire existence revolves around him making people feel good. he cannot tolerate seeing people in pain, though there are initial moments of harm that come when he's healing others. he has seen far too many get injured by the division, and unruly "normal" people, to really tolerate watching people get hurt. he will honestly help anyone, though, no matter whom they are or where their allegiances lie. he doesn't mean to harm people with his conversations, but he knows that if he acts too soft that he will get eaten alive by others with super genes. he's a listener, and like helping everyone, he will listen to everyone without criticism. often times, the cold side only comes out when approached by people who initiate negativity.
however, memphis can be a completely different person. he really is a vulnerable guy, and he can easily shut down. he can become easily terrified by the people around him, and doesn't handle threats very well. he may seem confident when in red mode, but if cornered by division agents, he will fold like a wet paper bag. memphis is also a bit greedy, and a bit impulsive. he isn't the best moral being, and will lie through his teeth to save himself. he can be easily persuaded to do certain things through money or threats, and will lie to other people to ensure they never find out. he's a brilliant double agent, though it's difficult to tell who he really bats for. on one hand, he wants to help people, and he knows the evils of the division. on the other, he is being forced to hand over wanted people to them. he is cunning, however, and quick on his feet. he would never say that he is manipulative, but he tends to try and use things to his advantage. he is a bit of a gossip, and stores information like an elephant, where it sits ready for use. he may be a powerful ally, but he can also be a downright dangerous enemy. he would rarely resort to violence, but that doesn't make him harmless.
from a young age, memphis was left to fend for himself. he was six when they took his mother. she was a powerful stitch, able to heal those who were in comas and other extreme circumstances. of course, it wasn't anything small or plain. no, they were suspicious that he and his younger sister would be able to stop them. the children were held to the family couch by a strong mover, and forced to watch as their mother was dragged out of her bedroom and into the living room. the division wanted her. she said no. he had tears streaming down his face as a bleeder attempted to "persuade" his mother otherwise. he was shrieking by the time that they were finally done, his mother unconscious and badly wounded. they had come to form an alliance with his mother, and only succeeded in ridding the world of one more useful stitch as she lay bleeding on the floor. both of the children were taken in her place, with hopes that if exposed to the genes, they would be able to come up with one person with enough power to help them. he spent several years working on some sort of technique, never in contact with his sister.
he wouldn't find out until he left that she tried to flee.
and didn't make it.
when he was fourteen, the first thoughts of leaving the division struck him. he could take care of most of the injured operatives, and while he liked to heal people, they began to stretching him in directions he didn't like. things began to transition from him healing, to unstitching people. as if it weren't painful enough to hear the screams of people as he slid bones back into place or plugged wounds, there was another dynamic. he began to be forced to harm people, undoing work that he would have otherwise been doing to save people. he was brainwashed, in a way. He had no say in whether or not he harmed or healed people. innocent people were injured at his hands, and he had no choice but to suck it up. this pattern continued for three years, until the age of seventeen. memphis knew at that time that he had to go, and that he couldn't survive doing this for the rest of his life. it was too painful, and it dredged up too many memories. he bribed a pusher into helping him get out, and they both successfully sprung from the place before parting ways.
memphis was on the run for two years. finally, he found a place that seemed to attract other refugees. they needed his help, new people were escaping or running with injuries. he set up a small shop in the back of a hole-in-the-wall restaurant. he took on a new name – red – only one word. it became a common name for many young refugees, and he was soon booming. he had a reputation for helping anyone, often times not charging people and giving them a place to sleep until they could move on. of course, there was a dark side. at the age of twenty-one, he was found by one of the people who he had worked for at the division. he was amazed it took so long, but he was told he could continue with his business on one condition – if they came to his door with a list of people, he was to turn them over if they came to him. he agreed, reluctantly, and has been left alone ever since. of course, while he may turn some of them in, he doesn't turn many of them in. he writes all his memories down, and enlists the help of pushers and wipers to help ensure the people he helps remain safe. although, if one agent reaches him soon enough with enough money, he will hand them over.
nobody suspects red will double-cross them.
